Favorite new App – IFTTT – If This Then That

My favorite new app these days is called IFTTT, and one of the best things about it is… it’s free. The acronym title stands for ‘If This, Then That’ and it’s virtually a customizable commands program. The company currently has a network of 72 channels – programs, apps, websites and more – to choose from in creating a ‘recipe.’ Each recipe consists of the following ingredients: the trigger (if this) and the corresponding action (then that). Popular Channels

Among the more popular of channels are Instagram, Evernote, LinkedIn, Google Calendar, Twitter and WordPress. One easy example of the app in use would be this: if someone tags me in a Facebook pic, then save that image to my Dropbox. Here’s an example of another recipe: if someone makes a transaction in my Yahoo Fantasy Football league, then send me a text. Unbelievable, I know!

Personal recipes can be turned on and off at your leisure, all easily adjusted through the IFTTT app or website. If you’ve created a recipe you’re quite proud of, you can easily share it with a friend or the whole IFTTT community if you’re so inclined. The interface is super easy to navigate around and extremely user friendly.

This is a business that initially started in the enterprise sector, helping large companies address continually evolving IT needs. The founders soon discovered that their fine idea could serve an even larger audience by extending it out to the average smartphone user as well. 

Our lives are so engaged these days in technology and especially that of the handheld kind, and a company like IFTTT really hammers home the ‘smart’ in smartphone.
