Netflix Tosses the Baby With the VPN Bathwater

business computer service-pc fixer mac and pc repairNetflix has a problem. The video streaming service is required to license TV shows and movies for every country they do business in. That's a tall order. Netflix is a global entertainment provider. Netflix reduces their costs by only licensing certain entertainment in the country where it's most likely to be profitable. When you sign into your Netflix account, the company knows where you're located by your IP address. It automatically delivers only the content you're allowed to see in your area. That led to a certain amount of frustration with users in one country who would like to watch the same programs as viewers just over a dotted line on the map. Pretty much anything that's available on the Internet... --

Planted Hotmail Password May Have Flushed Out Phishers

Today, a security researcher said that recently leaked Hotmail passwords may already have been used in a plot involving fake Chinese electronics and cheating users out of cash and credit card information. The suspect messages claim to be for an electronics retailer in China, and provide a link to its site which appears to be legitimate but is simply a front. Consumers caught up in the scam have reported that they never received the goods they ordered. The link to these Hotmail passwords is circumstantial, but still credible. The researcher speculated that the scammers had simply taken advantage of the apparent work of other criminals, swiping the account information from the Web and using those compromised accounts to send spam. Microsoft and Google say they have blocked the specific accounts, and both companies were eager to point... --

Hacker Expected to Pay For His Crime

Apparently the US, having not taken reasonable steps to protect its security, is now McKinnon, a hacker, to pick up the bill. A professor of security at the London School of Economics, Richard Sommer, said that damage assessments of computer security breaches should always consider "whether the victims have taken reasonable steps to limit the damage". McKinnon used Remotely Anywhere to hack US military computers in search of UFO secrets. The 42-year-old is facing extradition after being accused of hacking into 97 US computers and thus causing $700,000 in damages. Sommer said hackers should not be held accountable for the "consequential loss" resulting from their intrusion into systems unprotected by "preventative measures for reasonably foreseeable hazards". But security experts in the US say McKinnon should defnitely be liable for the full $700,000 of security... --
